Types of Treatment
All consultations with the physiotherapist will start with a full and thorough history of the problem and any relevant medical history, followed by a physical examination. A treatment plan will be discussed which may involve treatments such as mobilisation, manipulation, massage or electrotherapy and will probably be supported by an exercise program and any helpful advice or tips.
Mobilisation
Is a painfree, hands-on treatment using the therapists knowledge and experience of joint movement and anatomy to ease joint pain and stiffness.
Manipulation
Follows similar lines to mobilisation, using the orientation and planes of movement but at the end of the range, helping to restore full functional range and reduce pain.
Massage
May be used after mobilisation or manipulation to increase blood flow, aid healing, ease muscle soreness and facilitate relaxation.
Acupuncture
Alternative medicine using hair thin needles in specific acupuncture points to restore bodies energy, balance and stimulating healing.
Electrotherapy
Uses various electrical modalities such as ultrasound, interferrential, TENS or muscle stimulation to increase and improve blood flow, therefore, increase the rate of healing and help to relieve pain.
Exercises & home exercise programs
May be done as part of your physiotherapy session, but will probably be recommended to do at home to support and enhance your treatment. Exercises are used to maintain the range of joint movement and strengthen, and to stabilise the core function of the body.
Pilates
Body conditioning system of exercise which stabilises the body’s central core and improves posture, as part of your exercise programme.
Postural advice and guidance
Helping people to become aware and improve their posture, by finding ways to remember to regularly check and improve their position, and through exercises to strengthen particular muscle groups.
